A Great Success edition by Mrs Humphry Ward Children eBooks
This novella, published in 1915, is the story of Doris and her husband. After a few years of financial struggle fueled by his profligate ways, he becomes a hot item on the lecture circuit. His lecture on "Dizzy," a.k.a. Benjamin Disraeli, has the particular ability to captivate and enchant audiences (sometimes it's very hard to imagine what it would be like to live in the late 19th/early 20th century, isn't it?) and he has become the talk of the town. His new status has brought him to the attention of a rich woman who collects male artists and intellectuals, but doesn't have much use for their wives. When her husband decides to spend their summer vacation in Scotland with the nasty rich woman, Doris decides to stay in London (despite his frequently described "Jovian" looks, the guy is kind of a jerk). While in London, she becomes aware of a situation in which she can decide to help the woman's son avoid making a "wrong match" or just stand aside. There is a bit of suspence about her final decision, but nothing in this story is particularly enthralling. Partly due to the length, the characters and situations feel more sketched out than fully realized. Nothing really comes to life.
