Becky Sawyer’s life unravels in a single day. Not only does she catch her boyfriend, the man she hoped to marry, lip-locked with another woman, she also receives the gut-wrenching news that her grandfather, the man who raised her, is dying. His last wish? To see her happily married. Heartbroken, Becky seeks inspiration in the pages of the Holy Scriptures. And finds it in the story of Isaac and Rebekah. If love couldn't keep his parents together, Luke Masterson wonders what will make a marriage last. He decides to steer clear of all women—especially crazy ones like Becky Sawyer, who employs a friend to find her a husband. But when he feels the dogged promptings of the Holy Spirit to move across the country and marry a complete stranger, it seems love has little to do with it anyway. With commitment their only foundation, and love constantly thwarted, can an arranged marriage find happiness in the twenty-first century?

This story had so much potential. Indeed, the first half of the book was extremely enjoyable. It was nice to have characters who tried to live according to God's will for their lives, especially when doing so went against modern sensibilities. I gave the book two stars because the author dropped the ball in the second half. Becky starts treating her husband awfully. Luke, for his part, is far too passive. At one point, Becky actually lets Luke stay in a burning building to search for horse and her dog who was probably already dead anyways. In my mind this is borderline acceptable. It was a suicide mission. (Somehow, Luke is miraculously unscathed.) By what stretch of the imagination is this "Christian"? If Becky had an ounce of decency she would have at least felt the tribulation of the situation. Perhaps she would have felt guilty for risking Luke's life. She might have regretted her decision. Instead she is more concerned that her dog died than the fact that Luke is alive.Product details

About the Book
After catching her boyfriend cheating on her, Becky Sawyer decides she’s had it with love. This declaration puts her in quite the predicament, however, when she learns that not only is her beloved grandfather who raised her dying, but his last wish is to see her happily married. Turning to scripture for solace, Becky comes across the story of the deep love and commitment shared by Isaac and Rebekah even though they had an arranged marriage. Her mind made up, she asks her best friend to accomplish the impossible in modern times- find a man who is willing to marry her without even meeting her first. Lisa finds the perfect match in Luke Masterson- her boyfriend’s cousin. After presenting the arranged marriage idea to Luke, he immediately refuses. But as he, too, begins searching for God’s direction, he finds himself thinking about Becky and the idea of marrying her constantly until he senses the Holy Spirit nudging him to make a commitment to love Becky and marry her. As the two tie the knot and are joined as husband and wife, they face many challenges including getting to know one another, slowly building intimacy, and creating a foundation of trust as they try to carve a path to lasting love.
My Thoughts
In a modern culture where commitment seems disposable, The Isaac Project stands as a beacon of promise of what God’s vision of “death do us part” should look like as love being a choice made daily by two people. I was so intrigued with the concept of this plot because arranged marriages in modern day America are completely unheard of. As I read, I found that the arranged marriage was the perfect backdrop for displaying what “commitment” truly means. I love that Luke went into the marriage with eyes wide open choosing to love her, protect her, shelter her, partner with her, and woo her with the expectation that the “romantic” type of love would eventually follow. Oh my and his wooing! How sweet, tender, and at times playful it was! Amazing story that showcases the depth of love God intended a couple to share in the cocoon of marriage.

Absolutely loved this book! It was a fun read with the story of Isaac and Rebecca from the Bible interspersed with a modern day relationship. Rebecca is determined to find a husband before her grandfather, Poppy, passes away so he will know she is loved and will be cared for. She enlists the help of her best friend Lisa to go out and find the perfect man for her. Luke agrees to travel across the country to marry Rebecca. There are many twists and turns as things don't go quite so smoothly for Luke and Rebecca. There is also a bit of mystery as to who wants to sabotage Rebecca's farm and business and whether it is pranksters or something more sinister. There is lots of action to keep the reader engaged and turning the pages to see what will happen next. This book is written from the perspectives of Luke and Rebecca alternating voice usually by chapter. It is very clear who is speaking at any given time and the author made this style work very well. I recommend this book to everyone who likes a Christian based story.
Ever since reading my first series of books by Colleen Coble (the Lonestar series) about modern-day marriages of convenience, I've been in LOVE with this topic. In The Isaac Project, Sarah Monzon's debut release, she tackles the topic of a 21st-century "arranged" marriage. The title itself drew me in and I couldn't wait to read it.
Becky Sawyer has just been devastated after finding her boyfriend with someone else. Then she finds out the person dearest to her, her grandfather Poppy, is dying. His only regret is that he won't get to die knowing Becky is going to be cared for and loved by her husband, whoever that will be. Becky can't bear to let Poppy down. She enlists the help of a trusted friend to find her "Isaac" (like in the Bible story of Isaac and Rebekah).
Luke Masterson is a firefighter (a handsome one if the image in my head is correct) and when he first hears about a woman named Becky Sawyer who is willing to marry a complete stranger to make her grandfather happy, he thinks she's insane. Eventually, though, he gets the feeling that he IS that man.
Becky and Luke get married and although there is an instant attraction, things don't go as smoothly as you'd hope. The author throws in plenty of twists and unexpected catastrophes to keep us wondering, "Is this ever going to work out?"
Sarah Monzon has a writing style all her own and I can't wait to read more of her books. She's got a very unique author voice and I recommend her first book highly!
